Excerpts from our exclusive interview with him:
Q1) Tell us a little bit about your start-up and your journey, please.
In early 2013 I was selected as one of the “World’s top 17 Infographic Designers” while I was working with India Today Group as an Assistant Art Director. I always dreamt to start something of my own and run that my way. I didn’t quite appreciate the traditional work culture, how the businesses operated, and how they treated their employees and customers.
I had gained some popularity in the graphic design industry and started getting offers that gave me a chance to jump from being a full-time designer to a freelance designer. Late 2015, I had so much work that I couldn’t manage it all by myself. Then I thought of building a team and founded VisualBest in 2016. It was a team of three people in the beginning, which has now grown up to 20 versatile talents as well around 30 people from all over India who work remotely for our customers. I never think to be at the top in India or the industry, but I always try to be the first in the minds of my customers.
Q2) How did the idea for your business come about?
As I said, I disliked the work culture in most of the organizations I worked and wanted to build a dream work culture that all creative people dream about.
Also, I was always passionate about creating something out of the box, but in a regular job I faced lots of restrictions, limitations in the scope of work, and in most cases my bosses wanted me to work according to their vision and choices. When an opportunity came my way, I didn’t think twice and took the leap.
Q3) What was your key driving force to becoming an entrepreneur?
I wanted creative freedom to explore my creativity. When I started working with global clients, it gave me a job satisfaction and that’s what I always wanted. I wanted a standard set of parameters for growth, which is the balance of Quality and Performance for me. There are very few people in this industry who actually deliver quality work at a fair asking price. Either they do very cheap work or charge a huge amount that not every customer can afford. I saw a gap, and I am trying to fill this gap.
I deliver quality work within the budget and on time. We started collaborating with large agencies that do similar work, and now we are doing lots of things after learning from those agencies as well. What is more satisfying is when we address the customer’s purpose and in turn they tell the world how happy they are with our services. This emotion drives me crazy enough to stay in the business and make more happy customers.
Q4) How did you come up with the name for your business?
We always try to deliver the best and make sure that visual solutions we offer actually work for businesses. One of my Japanese friends suggested the VisualBest name and I thought that it did sound like a suitable name for my company.
Q5) What services do you offer?
We provide all kinds of digital services as we offer a one-stop business solution: Explainer videos, whiteboard videos, website development, UI/UX designs, illustrations, infographics, social media creatives, magazine layouts, e-books, report designs, social media marketing, advertisements, packaging designs, interactive, digital and print ads, etc.
Q6) Why should businesses choose your services?
If any business runs without proper digital marketing, they cannot survive for long despite the best product or services you offer. If you do not reach the right customers, no matter how hard you try, it becomes a waste of time and resources and that translates into a failure of business. We connect you with your right customers. We make your potential customers aware, inform and encourage them to buy your products or services.
But as I said, this is a complex process, and it involves lots of strategies, expertise, and efforts. If you run the business, you have to hire a good digital marketing agency that tells you exactly how you can reach out to your potential customers and how much you have been missing out in your existing customer base.
Q7) How do you market your business, and which tactics have been most successful?
Our marketing strategy is customer retention. We offer such a range of great services and business experiences that it makes any customer extremely happy, and they even go on to tell this to their network and that’s how we increase our customer base. We don’t run ads because it is not only expensive but an ineffective approach as well.
We make customer experience journey as smooth as possible and that’s how we get a repeat of business with them. We turn every new customer into our permanent and regular customer and this is all because we care for our customers — what they need — how we resolve their business problems and create surplus value for them.
Q8) Did the pandemic (COVID 19) affect your business? If yes, how?
Yes, it did. Coronavirus pandemic affected our business, let’s look at the positive aspect. You know every dark side comes with a bright side. Covid-19 has impacted most businesses, but people have now realized why the digital marketing should be their top priority to keep the business stable and afloat. If you are not telling the world about you, the world doesn’t really know you.
Q9) Have you considered any alliance/partnership/funding?
We are getting offers for partnerships and funding in the business, but we are looking for strategic partners too. That would take our business to the next level.
Q10) What are your responsibilities as the business owner?
My main responsibility is to make a stronger team. As a business owner I first ensure that my team is capable and has the expertise to serve our customers better. I put my team first because I know if I care about them, they would care about my customers. CARE is the main ingredient that helps me run my business. We all work for a common goal — customer satisfaction and success. If our customers succeed, we succeed.
Q11) How many hours a day do you work on an average and can you describe/outline your typical day?
I typically work 12-15 hours a day. For you that could be a lot, but for me, that’s not enough. I don’t notice the clock or the weekends if I am working with my customers. I easily change my timing/schedule according to my customer’s requirements.
Q12) What is your greatest fear and how do you manage it?
My greatest fear is what if a customer stops trusting us. It has not happened so far, but it bothers me always. To me, losing the customer’s trust is like loosing everything. To manage this fear, I and my whole team work really hard for our customers to make sure we deliver consistent quality without any excuses.
Q13) What comes first for you, transactions or emotions?
Emotions, it is. We interact with customers who are after all human beings like us. We all run on emotions. If we won’t understand their emotions, they won’t understand us either. Most of the businesses focus on a single, one-off sale. But we also focus on the purchase experience and decision-making process. We put ourselves in the customer’s shoes and try to understand their pain points. And this is why we always come up with the solutions that work for them seamlessly.
Q14) What are the achievements so for now?
VisualBest has steadily grown as one of India’s best graphic design companies with messaging customized to our clients’ needs. Our recent achievement, the prestigious “10 Most Promising Explainer Video Production Companies 2020,” by Silicon India Business Magazine, needs a special mention. Even during the trying times of 2020, our team showed immense spirit and worked towards our goals, culminating in this award. Also, we are ranked #9 and #7 as India’s Top Digital Marketing Agency on Clutch and The Manifest review platforms respectively.
Q15) What piece of advice would you give to college graduates who want to become entrepreneurs?
Focus on learning — not on money. For the first five years, your main priority has to just learn what you want to learn. Become entrepreneurs if you are driven by the prospect of providing solutions. You may fail many times but if you focus on learning and keep trying, you will definitely be successful. Get surrounded by like-minded people who can help you grow.
